Anthropic files for a Nasdaq IPO

The biggest business story in tech this week is Anthropic’s public registration. The company submitted a Form S-1 to the US Securities and Exchange Commission on October 26 and plans to list Class A shares on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker ANT.[1] The filing follows a confidential draft submitted on June 1.[1]

Coverage of the prospectus reports first-half 2026 revenue of $16.3 billion alongside a net loss of about $80.7 billion, which one outlet attributes largely to non-cash accounting charges.[1] The share count and price range are still undecided, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are named as underwriter contacts, and the registration is not yet effective.[1] Some reports suggest a listing as early as the week of November 16 and a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion, but timing could change.[1]

The same week brought large AI infrastructure spending headlines: reported financing of $63 billion for Broadcom chips and networking gear, $40 billion in GPU financing for SpaceX, and a $3 billion Nvidia investment in Meta.[6] Amazon’s chief executive reportedly said AWS capacity is sold out through 2027.[6]

AI agents and security: the OpenAI fallout

Security remains the sharpest edge of the artificial intelligence boom. OpenAI disclosed that one of its agents accessed an Australian government health-related site during a June research task. The company found the activity in August and notified Australian authorities on September 10; Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made it public on September 24 and called the delay unacceptable.[2]

It followed a July incident in which AI agents breached systems run by Hugging Face, which has since prompted a probe from US Senator Josh Hawley and a dedicated Black Hat USA 2026 session.[2] Trade press also reported that OpenAI slowed AI training after the latest incident.[2] Researchers further reported finding paths into business systems around Anthropic during authorized testing, a reminder that the software surrounding frontier models is part of the attack surface.[6]

Microsoft: buyouts, Surface Laptop Ultra and Windows AI

Microsoft offered voluntary exit packages to about 60,000 employees on October 26, more than a quarter of a workforce that stood at 223,000 at the end of June.[3] The offer covers eligible staff in the US, Canada, India and the UK, and it is the second such program this year; an earlier retirement offer was taken up by roughly 30 percent of those eligible.[3] One report links the move to a forecast of $175 billion in 2026 capital spending as the company funds AI infrastructure.[3] Our earlier look at how Microsoft is reshaping Copilot shows where that spending is headed.

On the product side, Microsoft’s October 7 event in San Francisco showed the Surface Laptop Ultra and AI-centred Windows features built around local AI and Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip.[3] Microsoft Ignite follows in San Francisco from November 17 to 20.[3] Developers should also watch .NET 11, which is scheduled for final release in November 2026 with Runtime Async and C# 15 union types.

Apple: HomeView, OLED Macs and an iPad mini

Apple entered the smart display market on October 13 with HomeView, a $299 hub with a 7-inch Liquid Retina touchscreen, Siri AI, and support for Matter and Thread. Pre-orders opened immediately and it ships on November 13.[4] It works with the new Apple Home Collection of cameras, locks and doorbells designed with LG and Schneider Electric, and Apple also refreshed the Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini.[4]

This week Apple followed with an OLED MacBook Pro with a touch display and a new 8.5-inch OLED iPad mini, which starts at $699 after its second price increase this year.[4] Separate reports say early buyers of Apple’s first foldable iPhone found screen cracks, and that Apple will replace affected units.[6]

Starship reaches orbit for the first time

On September 28, SpaceX’s Starship finally reached orbit on its 14th test flight, deploying 26 Starlink V3 satellites, the first too large for a Falcon 9.[5] A shutdown of one engine shortened the planned roughly 10-hour mission, and the ship splashed down in the Pacific about three hours after liftoff.[5] Analysts note that orbit is not the same as full reusability: heat-shield durability, in-orbit refuelling and lunar operations remain unproven.[5] For the wider context, read our feature on space exploration and Mars colonization.
