South Africa v Australia: Proteas win the decider and go top
Australia won the opening Test in Durban by 214 runs, with Matt Renshaw scoring 190 and 82 and Josh Hazlewood taking 6 for 49. South Africa then took control of the series. They won the second Test in Gqeberha by an innings and 31 runs, then won the decider at Newlands by 176 runs. Australia, set 288 to win, were dismissed for 111.
Kagiso Rabada took two wickets in the first over of the chase and reached 350 Test wickets, while Simon Harmer took six on the final day. The 2–1 win moved South Africa to No.1 in the ICC Test rankings and kept alive their hopes of defending the World Test Championship title. Australia have now lost four of their last seven Tests, and this was their first pair of consecutive Test defeats in three and a half years. Temba Bavuma called it one of the iconic series of the century. For more on this rivalry, read our South Africa vs Australia match coverage.
