Kimi Antonelli crowned 2026 F1 world champion

Kimi Antonelli sealed the championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix on 1 November. Starting fourth, he knew a finish in ninth place or better would be enough, and he took third to become the youngest champion the sport has seen, surpassing Sebastian Vettel's record. He is also the first Italian to win the title since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

It capped a remarkable second season in the sport for the Mercedes driver. He has won nine Grands Prix, including his home Italian Grand Prix from the back of the grid, as well as Monaco and Spa. After the finish he celebrated on the podium with fellow champions Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

Mexico City Grand Prix: Verstappen wins a chaotic race

Max Verstappen won the Mexico City Grand Prix by 0.799 seconds from Lewis Hamilton, completing a victory that took in a first-lap penalty, a late red flag and a title celebration behind him.

Hamilton started from pole, his first in a Ferrari, but Charles Leclerc cut a corner on the opening lap and took the lead. Leclerc did not give the place back and received a five-second penalty. George Russell, who had a slow start, tapped Isack Hadjar and was handed a ten-second penalty for the second race in a row.

The race was neutralised on lap 46 when Valtteri Bottas crashed after a front-left suspension failure. Hamilton had pitted under a virtual safety car just before the red flag, and on the restart he regained the place from Leclerc that he had lost on lap one. Late on, Oscar Piastri collided with Arvid Lindblad, who was sent into the wall, and Piastri was penalised.

United States Grand Prix: Antonelli dominates in Austin

A week before Mexico, Antonelli took pole position and then won the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas to move to the brink of the title. Leclerc fought through to second, 13.1 seconds behind, and Verstappen completed the podium. Hamilton was fourth and Norris fifth after a one-stop strategy, while Russell could manage only eighth. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff described it as Antonelli's best race.

The win left Antonelli needing only a ninth-place finish in Mexico to be sure of the championship, even if Russell had won the race.

Brazilian Grand Prix: Norris on pole at a wet Interlagos

Round 20 of the season is today at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace. Lando Norris claimed his third consecutive pole position at Interlagos in a rain-affected qualifying session, with a lap of 1:27.470. Russell was second, 0.204 seconds back, and the new champion Antonelli qualified third. Leclerc, Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg completed the top six.

Grid penalties are due for both Russell and Leclerc, so the final starting order will differ from the qualifying result below. Verstappen failed to set a time in Q2 and starts well down the field, and there is no sprint at this event.

F1 team news and talking points

Red Bull and Verstappen hit form

Red Bull went through the opening 15 rounds without a win. Max Verstappen has since won in Malaysia, Singapore and Mexico, and is now second in the standings. The championship is decided, so the fight for second place is the story to watch, with Hamilton just two points behind him.

Ferrari so close, again

Ferrari had a pole, two podiums in Mexico and a podium in Austin, yet no win. Hamilton's first Ferrari pole came to nothing when Leclerc's lap-one move scrambled the order, and Hamilton was seen storming into the back of the garage during the red flag. The team sits second in the constructors' standings, 135 points behind Mercedes.

Russell's difficult run

Russell has been hit with consecutive ten-second penalties and now faces a grid drop in Brazil. A strong result at Interlagos would help him close the gap to the podium places in the final standings.
