ATP Lyon: Fritz rolls on, Wawrinka and Cobolli set for a showpiece
The Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in Lyon is an indoor ATP 250, and its top eight seeds this year were Flavio Cobolli, Taylor Fritz, Valentin Vacherot, Tommy Paul, Brandon Nakashima, Lorenzo Musetti, Ugo Humbert and Arthur Fery. Fritz, the second seed, handled Herbert, a qualifier and one of France’s best-known doubles specialists, with little fuss on Thursday.
The tournament has already delivered shocks. Local favourite Humbert, the seventh seed, was beaten by Corentin Moutet in a three-set tie-break decider. Matteo Berrettini lost in straight sets to qualifier Kyrian Jacquet, who has spoken about how special it is to win at home. Cameron Norrie fell to Benjamin Bonzi, and Borna Gojo, a qualifier, knocked out eighth seed Fery.
Tonight’s main attraction pairs the tournament’s top seed with a wildcard who refuses to fade. Stan Wawrinka, the former Grand Slam champion, saved himself in a first-round thriller against Martin Landaluce, winning 6-3, 6-7, 7-6, and now meets Cobolli. The Italian has been one of the stories of the 2026 season, and a deep run here would further strengthen his case in the Race to Turin. Wawrinka’s career is a staple of tennis history; see how great champions are remembered in our Wimbledon past winners feature.
Almaty and Brussels: Medvedev and Auger-Aliassime defend titles
Two more ATP 250 events run alongside Lyon. In Almaty, Daniil Medvedev arrives as the defending champion from 2025, and the second round on Wednesday produced a handful of notable results according to ESPN’s scoreboard: Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced, Adrian Mannarino got past Andrey Rublev, and Tomas Machac and Jan-Lennard Struff also appeared on the order of play. Thursday’s late match in Almaty, between Alexander Bublik and Fabian Marozsan, had finished at the time of writing, though the score had not yet been published by the feed.
In Brussels, the BNP Paribas Fortis European Open is the other 250 on the schedule. Félix Auger-Aliassime won the 2025 edition and the field has been thinning out quickly. Bergs, the local hope, was among Thursday’s winners, defeating the experienced Dzumhur in straight sets.
Challenger Tour and UTR events: the global ladder
Below the main tour, the ATP Challenger circuit spans Cali in Colombia, Lisbon in Portugal, Florence in Italy and Fort Worth in the United States. These events matter to climbing players because ranking points earned here can open the door to main-draw entry at bigger tournaments. In Cali, Nicolas Jarry plays Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida tonight, while Carlos María Zarate and Francisco Comesaña were locked at one set apiece with a decider under way.
The UTR Pro Tennis Tour events in Lubbock, Texas, and Carvoeiro, Portugal, give emerging professionals and college-level players match play. On Thursday, Miguel Semedo and Oriol Font won in straight sets in Carvoeiro, while in Lubbock several matches, among them Kaili Demi Teso against Mayra Gisone in the women’s draw, were still in progress.
How the 2026 season got here
The year has been defined by a rivalry between two men. Carlos Alcaraz opened the season by winning the Australian Open, beating Novak Djokovic in a four-set final, and then added the Qatar Open title. Jannik Sinner answered by winning the Indian Wells Masters, then beating Alcaraz in the Monte Carlo Masters final to return to world No. 1, and followed up with a title in Madrid. At Wimbledon, Sinner defeated Alexander Zverev in the final to claim a second consecutive crown at the All England Club.

The Race to Turin: who is in, who is chasing
The Nitto ATP Finals take place in Turin, Italy, from 15 to 22 November 2026, at the Inalpi Arena on indoor hard courts. The eight highest-ranked players in the season-long Race qualify. Sinner confirmed his place on 10 July after reaching the Wimbledon final, Zverev secured his spot at the same tournament, and Alcaraz booked his place on 16 September.
Who else is in the hunt? Italian coverage of the Race this autumn highlighted Flavio Cobolli as the season’s surprise package and Ben Shelton as close to a second straight qualification. Medvedev’s title in Hangzhou, where he beat fellow Russian Rublev in the final, also kept the pressure on rivals in the lower qualifying places. That same report noted that Sinner had been managing a knee injury around the Beijing event, so his fitness over the closing weeks will be one of the stories to watch.
Players finishing ninth and tenth in the Race travel to Turin as alternates, and a Grand Slam winner placed between ninth and twentieth can claim the final qualification spot. That makes every ranking point from the remaining indoor events, including smaller 250s like Lyon, Almaty and Brussels, potentially decisive for the last berths.
