Early Life

Black Coffee was born in Umlazi, Durban, and spent part of his childhood in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. He studied Jazz at Technikon Natal (now Durban University of Technology), where he developed his musical foundation.

At the age of 13, he sustained a brachial plexus injury that left his left arm partially paralyzed following a taxi accident during the political unrest in South Africa. Despite this challenge, he built one of the most successful DJ careers in the world.

Career

Black Coffee began his professional music career in the mid-1990s and gained national recognition after participating in the Red Bull Music Academy in 2004. His self-titled debut album, released in 2005 through his own label, Soulistic Music, established him as one of South Africa's leading house music producers.

His distinctive production style combines African rhythms, jazz, soul, deep house, and electronic music, resulting in a sophisticated sound that has attracted audiences worldwide.
