African Union Peace and Security Council Prioritizes Education in Conflict-Affected Regions

The Council emphasized that protecting educational institutions is essential to preventing further instability. Member states were encouraged to strengthen policies that safeguard schools, improve access to quality education during emergencies, and integrate education into national peacebuilding and reconstruction strategies.

Regional Security Challenges

The discussion comes as several parts of Africa continue to face complex security challenges, including insurgencies, terrorism, political instability, unconstitutional changes of government, and humanitarian crises. Regions such as the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Sudan remain among the AU's highest security priorities.

The Peace and Security Council reaffirmed its commitment to supporting diplomatic dialogue, conflict prevention, mediation initiatives, and post-conflict reconstruction while working closely with Regional Economic Communities (RECs), the United Nations, and other international partners.

Strengthening Continental Cooperation

The African Union continues to promote its "Silencing the Guns" initiative, which seeks to reduce armed conflict through stronger governance, improved security cooperation, and greater investment in conflict prevention. The Council stressed that sustainable peace cannot be achieved through military solutions alone but requires investment in education, healthcare, economic opportunity, and inclusive governance.

Member states were encouraged to increase collaboration on intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism efforts, border security, and humanitarian assistance while addressing the root causes of instability, including poverty, inequality, climate-related pressures, and weak public institutions.

Humanitarian Impact

Humanitarian organizations continue to warn that millions of African children remain out of school because of conflict and displacement. The AU noted that rebuilding education systems is critical to preventing the emergence of a "lost generation" and ensuring long-term economic recovery in fragile states.

The Council also highlighted the importance of protecting teachers, educational facilities, and students under international humanitarian law while encouraging governments to invest in resilient education systems capable of operating during emergencies.
