Bayern Munich began their title defence with a five-goal demolition of Stuttgart, while newly promoted Elversberg produced the opening weekend's biggest upset. Across nine matches, the Bundesliga delivered 35 goals, two hat-tricks and several dramatic late twists.
The 2026/27 Bundesliga season began in emphatic fashion, with the opening weekend producing goals, comebacks, a historic promotion story and an early reminder that Bayern Munich remain the benchmark in Germany.
The champions opened the campaign on Friday night by overwhelming VfB Stuttgart 5–1 at the Allianz Arena. RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund also collected convincing victories, while newly promoted SV Elversberg stunned Bayer Leverkusen 3–2 in one of the most remarkable opening-day results in recent Bundesliga history.
There was drama elsewhere. Eintracht Frankfurt surrendered a two-goal advantage in a 3–3 draw at Union Berlin despite a hat-trick from Younes Ebnoutalib, Cologne overturned Hoffenheim with two late Thijs Dallinga goals, and Freiburg's Yuito Suzuki announced himself with a hat-trick in a 4–1 win over Werder Bremen.

Bayern Munich 5–1 VfB Stuttgart
Bayern Munich could hardly have asked for a stronger opening to their title defence. Vincent Kompany's side swept Stuttgart aside 5–1, recovering immediately after the visitors briefly equalised early in the second half.
Dayot Upamecano opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a header from a Joshua Kimmich delivery. Stuttgart responded through Josha Vagnoman seven minutes after half-time, but the parity lasted only three minutes before Michael Olise restored Bayern's lead.
Vagnoman then inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, giving Bayern a two-goal cushion. Aleksandar Pavlovic added a fourth late on before Luis Díaz completed the rout in stoppage time.
The result reinforced the impression that Bayern remain the team to beat. They scored 122 league goals last season and showed little indication that their attacking production is about to slow down.

RB Leipzig 3–0 Borussia Mönchengladbach
Martín Demichelis enjoyed an excellent Bundesliga debut as RB Leipzig dispatched Borussia Mönchengladbach 3–0.
Ridle Baku gave Leipzig the lead in the 26th minute before Antonio Nusa doubled the advantage shortly after half-time with a spectacular curling finish. Rocco Reitz, facing his former club, completed the scoring in the 66th minute after being set up by returning Leipzig attacker Christopher Nkunku.
Leipzig's clean sheet and three-goal margin placed them among the early leaders, while Nusa's display earned him the official Man of the Match award.

Mainz 0–0 Paderborn
The weekend's only goalless match saw newly promoted Paderborn earn a point away from home. Mainz created the better opportunities but were unable to find a way through goalkeeper Nahuel Noll.
Mainz forward Tietz came closest when he struck the crossbar, while both teams struggled to create clear-cut chances. The Bundesliga's first goalless draw of the new campaign therefore ended with both sides taking a point.

Union Berlin 3–3 Eintracht Frankfurt
One of the weekend's most dramatic contests ended level after Frankfurt appeared to have secured all three points.
Emmanuel Latte Lath put Union ahead after only three minutes, but Ebnoutalib turned the match around almost immediately. He scored in the 10th minute and struck again just a minute later to put Frankfurt ahead.
Ebnoutalib completed his hat-trick in the 67th minute, seemingly putting Frankfurt in control at 3–1. Union refused to surrender, however. Querfeld reduced the deficit in the 79th minute before Tim Skarke dramatically equalised in the second minute of stoppage time.

Cologne 3–2 Hoffenheim
Cologne produced one of the weekend's best comebacks, overturning Hoffenheim after falling behind twice.
Adam Daghim gave Hoffenheim the lead before Said El Mala levelled early in the second half. Ozan Kabak restored the visitors' advantage in the 67th minute, but substitute Thijs Dallinga changed the game.
Dallinga equalised in the 72nd minute and completed the turnaround ten minutes later, sending Cologne into celebration with a 3–2 victory. Hoffenheim had also missed a penalty through Max Moerstedt in the 57th minute.

SV Elversberg 3–2 Bayer Leverkusen
The biggest shock of the weekend came in Saarland, where newly promoted Elversberg defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3–2 in their first-ever Bundesliga match.
Elversberg raced into a 3–0 lead, with Lukas Petkov opening the scoring and American forward Cole Campbell adding a second only a minute later. David Mokwa then made it three, leaving Leverkusen facing a stunning defeat.
Bayer eventually responded through Patrik Schick and Christian Kofane, but the comeback arrived too late. Elversberg held on to claim three points and one of the most memorable victories in the club's history.

Borussia Dortmund 2–0 Hamburg
Borussia Dortmund began their campaign with a controlled 2–0 victory over Hamburg. Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring in the ninth minute after combining with Konstantinos Karetsas.
Giannis Konstantelias doubled the lead immediately before half-time, scoring his first Bundesliga goal. Dortmund were reduced to ten men in the 77th minute when substitute Samuele Inácio was sent off, but Hamburg could not take advantage.
Dortmund therefore joined Bayern and Leipzig among the early winners, while Hamburg's return to the Bundesliga began with defeat.

Freiburg 4–1 Werder Bremen
Yuito Suzuki was the star of Sunday's action, scoring a hat-trick as Freiburg powered past Werder Bremen 4–1.
Suzuki opened the scoring in the 29th minute before Igor Matanović made it 2–0 just before half-time. Suzuki then struck twice in the space of seven minutes after the interval to complete his hat-trick.
Dariusz Stalmach pulled one back for Bremen in the 76th minute, but Freiburg had already done enough to secure one of the weekend's most convincing victories.

Schalke's task became considerably harder when Ron Schallenberg was dismissed in the 62nd minute. Anton Kade took advantage by doubling Augsburg's lead in the 80th minute, while Rodrigo Ribeiro added a third in stoppage time.
The result meant Schalke's return to the top flight ended in defeat, while Augsburg started the campaign with three points and a clean sheet.

Frankfurt, Union Berlin, Mainz and Paderborn all took a point, while Stuttgart, Hoffenheim, Leverkusen, Hamburg, Bremen, Mönchengladbach and Schalke began the campaign without points.

If the opening weekend is any indication, the new Bundesliga campaign could be considerably more unpredictable outside the title race. Bayern's attacking strength was immediately evident, while Dortmund and Leipzig also made strong starts.
At the other end of the scale, Elversberg's victory over Leverkusen and Paderborn's point at Mainz demonstrated that the promoted sides are not merely there to make up the numbers. Freiburg's attacking display and Suzuki's hat-trick were another major talking point.
The most encouraging feature, however, was the sheer amount of drama. From Frankfurt's late collapse to Cologne's comeback and Elversberg's three-goal assault on Leverkusen, Matchday 1 provided plenty of evidence that the 2026/27 Bundesliga season will have no shortage of storylines.
Primary match results and official match information were checked against the German Football Association (DFB) data centre and official Bundesliga match reports.
