Bundesliga Weekend Roundup: The Bigger Picture
Matchday 3 has made one thing clear: the 2026/27 Bundesliga season is unlikely to follow a predictable script. Freiburg have taken the early lead with a perfect record, while Dortmund have matched them point for point.
Bayern Munich remain firmly in contention, but their narrow victory over Elversberg showed that the champions are not going to have everything their own way. Harry Kane's winner was ultimately enough to preserve Bayern's unbeaten start.
Freiburg's 5–0 demolition of Gladbach was the weekend's standout result. Yannik Engelhardt and Igor Matanović both scored twice, while the sending off of Tim Kleindienst made an already difficult afternoon even worse for the visitors.
Dortmund were similarly ruthless against Paderborn, although their victory was built on patience. Fábio Silva scored early before Felix Nmecha struck twice late to make the scoreline emphatic.
Leipzig's 5–0 victory over Hamburg was another major storyline. Five different players scored for the hosts, including Christopher Nkunku, while Hamburg's extraordinary run without a goal leaves them with an immediate fight for survival.
With Freiburg and Dortmund perfect, Bayern only two points behind and several clubs already showing impressive attacking form, the Bundesliga table is developing into a fascinating early-season contest.
