Brighton & Hove Albion opened the 2026/27 Premier League campaign in emphatic fashion, sweeping aside Aston Villa 4–0 at the American Express Stadium. Brighton scored all four goals during a dominant first half, exploiting Villa's defensive mistakes and taking complete control of the contest.
The breakthrough arrived in the eighth minute. Maxim De Cuyper struck the post after rounding goalkeeper Marco Bizot, with the rebound hitting Villa defender Victor Lindelöf and ending up in the net for an own goal. De Cuyper then scored himself in the 18th minute, converting a cross from Georginio Rutter.
Jack Hinshelwood completed the rout with two goals in the space of two minutes, scoring in the 30th and 31st minutes. His quickfire double gave Brighton a four-goal advantage before half-time and effectively settled the match.
Villa's afternoon deteriorated further when João Gomes was sent off for violent conduct in the 40th minute. Brighton consequently faced little threat after the interval and comfortably protected its four-goal lead.
