Defending champions Argentina produced a dramatic comeback to defeat England 2–1 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final at Atlanta Stadium on 15 July 2026, earning a place in the World Cup Final against Spain.
England appeared on course for victory after Anthony Gordon opened the scoring, but Argentina struck twice late in the match through Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez, both goals created by Lionel Messi.
England defended well for much of the contest after taking the lead early in the second half. However, Argentina dominated possession in the closing minutes and increased the pressure.
Lionel Messi inspired the comeback by providing assists for both goals. Enzo Fernández equalized with a long-range strike before Lautaro Martínez headed home the dramatic winning goal deep into stoppage time.
Messi was named Player of the Match after leading Argentina into another FIFA World Cup Final.
