Rodri makes his long-awaited Barça debut off the bench as the reigning champions ease to a 2-0 home win, extending their unbeaten home run in the league to 20 matches and their head-to-head dominance of Athletic to six straight wins.
BARCELONA — Goals from Raphinha and substitute Fermín López gave Barcelona a comfortable 2-0 win over Athletic Club at the Spotify Camp Nou on Thursday, sending Hansi Flick's side above Real Madrid to the top of La Liga in the club's first home match of the season — and providing the backdrop for World Cup Golden Ball winner Rodri's long-awaited Barça debut.
The postponed Matchday 1 fixture, delayed by the number of players from both squads involved in the latter stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saw the reigning champions extend an already daunting head-to-head record over the Basque club: Barcelona have now won six straight meetings with Athletic, scoring 19 goals and conceding just once across that run.
Barcelona dominated the ball from the outset, with Anthony Gordon a constant outlet down the right and Lamine Yamal twice going close — first curling an effort wide, then striking the crossbar after the break. Raphinha headed against the post with goalkeeper Unai Simón beaten, while Pedri had a goal correctly ruled out for offside before halftime. Athletic's best moment of the opening period came on the counter, forcing a smart save from Joan García, but the hosts otherwise controlled proceedings, racking up 1.34 expected goals in the first half alone to Athletic's 0.01.
The breakthrough finally came in the 37th minute, when Pedri slid a through ball in behind the Athletic defense for Raphinha, who rounded Simón and slotted into an empty net — his third goal in Barcelona's opening two matches of the season.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Barcelona continuing to create chances — Gordon spurning a good opportunity and Yamal rattling the bar — while Simón produced several more saves to keep Athletic in the contest. The points were finally settled in the 82nd minute when Athletic defender Aymeric Laporte failed to deal with a low cross from substitute Karim Adeyemi, allowing Fermín López to steer the loose ball home from close range and make it 2-0.
Rodri, signed from Manchester City for a package worth €76.5 million ($89m) and coming off a minor back procedure following his World Cup exploits, was introduced in the 63rd minute to warm applause from the Camp Nou crowd, marking his first appearance in Barça colors. Athletic, for their part, failed to register a single shot on target across the 90 minutes, extending their winless run at Camp Nou to 16 matches.

The win moves Barcelona to six points from two matches and above Real Madrid at the top of the early La Liga table, while extending the champions' home unbeaten streak in the league to 20 matches — their longest such run since a 25-game streak between November 2012 and January 2014. Athletic, already beaten 3-1 by Sevilla in their opening fixture, remain winless through two rounds.
Speaking after the match, Flick praised his new midfield signing, describing Rodri as the "perfect" addition for the Spanish champions following his debut cameo, as Barcelona continue their pursuit of a third consecutive La Liga title under the German coach.
