  • Maverick Viñales is regarded as one of the most naturally talented riders of the modern MotoGP era. Known by his nickname "Top Gun", the Spanish racer has built a career defined by speed, adaptability and technical excellence. Having won races with Suzuki, Yamaha and Aprilia before joining KTM, Viñales has become one of only a handful of riders capable of succeeding with multiple manufacturers in Grand Prix motorcycle racing.

Early Career

Born in Figueres, Catalonia, Viñales began riding motorcycles as a child and quickly established himself as one of Spain's brightest young talents. His junior career included victories in regional and national championships before capturing the CEV 125cc Championship in 2010 and the European 125cc Championship in 2011.

His success earned him a place in the Grand Prix World Championship, where he immediately impressed with multiple victories during his rookie season.

Moto3 World Champion

Viñales entered the lightweight Grand Prix class in 2011 and rapidly became one of the championship's leading riders. After several race victories over three seasons, he secured the 2013 Moto3 World Championship following an intense title battle against fellow Spaniards Luis Salom and Álex Rins.

The championship established him as one of motorcycle racing's brightest prospects.

Moto2 Success

Moving into Moto2 in 2014 with Pons Racing, Viñales adapted immediately to the larger and more powerful motorcycles. During his debut campaign he claimed four victories and several podium finishes, ending the season third overall and earning Rookie of the Year honours.

MotoGP Career

Suzuki (2015–2016)

Suzuki promoted Viñales directly into MotoGP for 2015. His rookie season showcased remarkable consistency, and he quickly established himself among the championship's elite riders.

His breakthrough arrived in 2016 when he won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, delivering Suzuki's first MotoGP victory since 2007 and his maiden premier-class win.

Yamaha Factory Racing (2017–2021)

Viñales joined Yamaha alongside nine-time World Champion Valentino Rossi in 2017. His Yamaha career began spectacularly with victories in Qatar, Argentina and France, immediately placing him among the championship favourites.

Although Yamaha experienced performance challenges in later seasons, Viñales remained one of the fastest riders on the grid, securing numerous race wins, podiums and pole positions.

He finished third in the MotoGP World Championship in both 2017 and 2019 before his relationship with Yamaha came to an early end during the 2021 season.

Aprilia Racing (2021–2024)

Viñales joined Aprilia midway through 2021 and became instrumental in the development of the RS-GP. After adapting to the new machine, he achieved a landmark victory at the 2024 Grand Prix of the Americas.

That victory made him the first rider in the MotoGP era to win premier-class races for three different manufacturers—Suzuki, Yamaha and Aprilia.

Red Bull KTM Tech3 (2025–Present)

Seeking a new challenge, Viñales joined Red Bull KTM Tech3 to help develop the KTM RC16 into a championship-winning motorcycle.

His KTM journey has included competitive performances, technical development work and periods of injury recovery. Throughout 2026 he has remained committed to the project despite speculation regarding his future, publicly confirming that he intends to honour his current contract.
