Iga Świątek arrives in New York with something she had been searching for throughout much of the 2026 season: momentum. After an 11-month wait for a tournament title, the Polish star finally returned to the winner's circle in Toronto before following that breakthrough with a semifinal appearance in Cincinnati.

The results have changed the complexion of Świątek's US Open campaign. Rather than entering the final Grand Slam of the year still searching for her best form, the six-time Grand Slam champion arrives having beaten some of the strongest players on hard courts and demonstrated that her game is again capable of producing sustained pressure at the highest level.

Why Świątek is one of the US Open's leading contenders:
  • She won the 2026 National Bank Open in Toronto, her first title of the season.
  • The Toronto victory ended an 11-month title drought.
  • She defeated world No. 2 Elena Rybakina 6-2, 6-3 in the Toronto final.
  • The title was the 26th of Świątek's career and her 12th WTA 1000 crown.
  • She reached the Cincinnati semifinals and won 10 consecutive matches before losing to Jessica Pegula.
  • She and Casper Ruud are also returning to the US Open mixed-doubles event after reaching the 2025 final.

Toronto changed the mood around Świątek

The biggest reason for the optimism surrounding Świątek is her performance at the National Bank Open in Toronto. The former world No. 1 had not won a title since 2025, but she produced one of her most convincing tournaments of the season to end the drought.

Świątek saved her most impressive performance for the final, defeating second seed Elena Rybakina 6-2, 6-3 in just 75 minutes. The victory was particularly significant because Rybakina had caused Świątek problems in recent meetings and entered the tournament as one of the principal threats to Aryna Sabalenka's position at the top of the rankings.

The WTA's official report on the Toronto final confirmed that the championship was Świątek's first of 2026 and the 26th singles title of her career.

The Toronto trophy also moved Świątek to 12 WTA 1000 titles, taking her past Sabalenka and into outright second place on the all-time list for the tournament category. Only Serena Williams, with 13, has won more.

It was not simply about winning a title

For Świątek, the importance of Toronto went beyond the trophy. The Polish player had endured a season in which she had struggled to convert strong performances into championships. Before Toronto, she had not reached a final in 2026.

The run in Canada therefore provided evidence that her game could still withstand the pressure of a WTA 1000 tournament from start to finish. Defeating Rybakina so decisively in the final added another important element: Świątek was not merely surviving against the elite; she was capable of overwhelming them.

Roland-Garros also highlighted the importance of the Canadian breakthrough, describing the Toronto title as the end of an 11-month drought and noting that the victory represented her 12th WTA 1000 championship.

From Toronto straight to Cincinnati

The timing of the Toronto victory created its own challenge. Świątek had virtually no opportunity to celebrate before travelling to Cincinnati for another WTA 1000 tournament and the final major hard-court test before the US Open.

The Cincinnati Open itself noted that Świątek arrived less than 24 hours after winning in Toronto. She acknowledged the intensity of the schedule, but also stressed the importance of appreciating major victories rather than immediately moving on from them.

The Cincinnati Open's account of her arrival captured the unusual turnaround: Toronto one night, Ohio the next, followed immediately by the defence of her Cincinnati title.

A nine-match winning streak becomes 10

The demanding schedule did not immediately slow Świątek down. She opened her Cincinnati title defence by beating Colombia's Emiliana Arango 6-3, 6-0, extending her winning streak to seven matches and her winning streak at the Cincinnati tournament to seven.

She then recovered from a set down against Maria Sakkari, winning 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 to extend her overall winning streak to eight matches. Against Diane Parry in the fourth round, Świątek produced another composed performance, winning 6-3, 6-3 and reaching her 30th WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

The WTA's Cincinnati report noted that the victory gave Świątek nine consecutive wins and marked her 30th quarterfinal appearance in 48 WTA 1000 events.

She then advanced to the semifinals when Elena Rybakina retired while trailing 4-1 because of a left ankle injury. That result meant Świątek had won 10 straight matches since her Toronto campaign began.

The WTA's match report confirmed the retirement and Świątek's progression into the semifinals.

Pegula finally stops the run

Jessica Pegula ended Świątek's winning streak in a dramatic Cincinnati semifinal. The American defeated the defending champion 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in a contest that lasted almost three hours.

The result was a setback, but hardly a warning sign for Świątek. She had recovered from a difficult start to take the second set and led 3-1 in the deciding set before Pegula turned the match around.

The WTA's report on the semifinal described the match as a seesawing contest and noted that Pegula's victory snapped Świątek's 10-match winning streak.

Reuters likewise reported that Pegula defeated the six-time Grand Slam champion after nearly three hours, setting up an all-American Cincinnati final against Coco Gauff. Gauff ultimately defeated Pegula 6-2, 6-4 to win the tournament.

The hard-court question has changed

Świątek's relationship with hard courts has been one of the most closely examined aspects of her career. Her most dominant results have traditionally come on clay, where her heavy topspin, movement and ability to control rallies have made her the benchmark for much of the women's game.

Yet her US Open record demonstrates that she is far from a clay-court specialist. She won the New York title in 2022 and has repeatedly shown that her baseline game can be highly effective on the faster American surface.

The 2026 North American swing has reinforced that point. Toronto provided the title, while Cincinnati demonstrated that Świątek could maintain her level against different opponents and conditions over consecutive weeks.

New York brings a different kind of pressure

The US Open, however, will test Świątek in a different environment. New York brings larger crowds, night sessions, long rallies under intense conditions and the expectation that established champions should contend for the title.

The women's singles draw is scheduled to be revealed on Thursday, August 27, with main-draw action beginning on Sunday, August 30. The official US Open women's singles draw page confirms that the draw is being released on August 27.

The tournament runs through September 13 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, making it the final Grand Slam test of the season.

Świątek remains part of the title conversation

Even with the emergence of several major contenders, Świątek remains one of the players capable of winning the championship. Aryna Sabalenka enters as the defending champion, while Coco Gauff arrives after winning Cincinnati, and Jessica Pegula has demonstrated that she can challenge Świątek over three sets.

The wider field also includes Elena Rybakina, whose ankle injury forced her out of the Cincinnati quarterfinal against Świątek, and Amanda Anisimova, who has returned to strong form after battling injuries and burnout.

That depth means Świątek cannot expect a straightforward route through the tournament. But her recent results suggest that she is equipped to handle the level of competition.

A mixed-doubles encore with Casper Ruud

Świątek has also been part of the US Open story before the singles tournament begins through her partnership with Casper Ruud in mixed doubles.

The Polish-Norwegian pair reached the mixed-doubles final at the 2025 US Open, where they lost to Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. They have returned for the 2026 edition, bringing back a partnership that generated considerable attention last year.

The US Open's feature on the pair noted their return and their shared connection to Rafael Nadal through their training backgrounds.

The mixed-doubles event is separate from the main singles competition, but it gives Świątek an opportunity to compete in the New York environment before the singles draw takes centre stage.

What has changed since the start of 2026?

The most important change is psychological as much as statistical. Earlier in the season, Świątek was being judged against the exceptionally high standard she established during her rise to world No. 1 and her Grand Slam victories.

A season without a title can quickly become a narrative of decline for a player who has won six majors. Toronto interrupted that narrative. Cincinnati then showed that the victory was not an isolated performance.

Even though Pegula ended her run, Świątek left Cincinnati having played 10 consecutive winning matches across the two tournaments and reached another WTA 1000 semifinal. That is a far stronger platform from which to approach the US Open than the one she had only a few weeks earlier.

The challenge is converting momentum into another Grand Slam

Momentum is valuable, but it does not guarantee a Grand Slam title. The US Open requires a player to win seven singles matches over two weeks, manage recovery between rounds and withstand the psychological pressure that intensifies as the tournament progresses.

Świątek has already proved she can do that. Her 2022 US Open championship remains one of the defining achievements of her career, and her six Grand Slam titles demonstrate that she knows how to navigate the latter stages of major tournaments.

What makes 2026 particularly intriguing is the contrast between that established experience and her recent resurgence. She is no longer chasing her first breakthrough in New York. Instead, she is attempting to turn a late-season revival into another major championship.

A dangerous opponent at exactly the right time

Świątek's arrival in New York therefore carries a different tone from her approach to the US Open earlier in the year. The long wait for a title is over. Her confidence on hard courts has been reinforced. She has beaten elite opposition and endured difficult matches without losing her competitive edge.

The defeat by Pegula is a reminder that she is not unbeatable, but it also demonstrated that she can stay in a contest against one of the world's best players and fight through momentum swings.

With the draw set to be revealed on August 27, the immediate questions will centre on Świątek's potential route through the tournament and which of the other leading contenders could stand between her and another Grand Slam final.

For now, the most significant development is simpler: Iga Świątek looks like a player who has rediscovered her timing at precisely the moment the season reaches its biggest stage.

New York will determine whether that momentum can carry her all the way to another US Open title.
