Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka are rolling through the early rounds at Flushing Meadows, but the tournament's opening days have been just as defined by who isn't there — Jannik Sinner never made the start line, and Novak Djokovic is already out.
The 2026 US Open has been shaped as much by absences and upsets as by the players still winning matches. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdrew on August 21 with a right knee injury — the first major he has missed since his 2019 debut — elevating Roland Garros champion Alexander Zverev to the tournament's top seed. Then, in one of the biggest shocks in recent Grand Slam history, four-time champion Novak Djokovic was eliminated in the first round by Argentina's Mariano Navone in a grueling five-setter, snapping a 78-match streak of never losing before the third round in New York and ending his run at the earliest stage he's exited a major since 2006.
Djokovic described the physical toll candidly after his exit, saying he had "carried" the same issue through most of his matches in 2026 — vomiting during play, cramping, and a body that has "basically" started collapsing under him late in matches.
On a brighter note for the tournament's biggest names, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has looked sharp in his return from the wrist injury that wiped out his French Open and Wimbledon campaigns, cruising through his first two matches in straight and four sets respectively. Two-time defending women's champion Aryna Sabalenka has also opened in routine fashion, chasing a third consecutive New York title that would make her the first woman to three-peat at the US Open since Serena Williams in 2012–2014.

At 46 years old, Venus Williams became the oldest woman to compete in the US Open singles main draw since Renée Richards in 1981, entering on a wildcard. Her first-round match against Sofia Kenin began at 12:13am — the latest start time in US Open history, surpassing the previous record of 12:08am set by a Sabalenka–Ekaterina Alexandrova match in 2024. Williams ultimately fell to Kenin 6-2, 7-6(6), but her participation alone marked a milestone night at Flushing Meadows.
With Sinner sidelined, the men's world No. 1 ranking picture is unusually static for the fortnight, but the women's draw has genuine stakes: Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff are all in contention for the WTA's top ranking depending on how deep they advance. Rybakina is guaranteed to reach No. 1 if she makes the semifinals regardless of other results, while Sabalenka can retain top spot only by winning the title if Rybakina reaches the last four.

With the tournament now into its third round, attention turns to whether Alcaraz's wrist can hold up as matches lengthen, whether Zverev can convert his elevated seeding into a deep run in Sinner's absence, and how the congested women's No. 1 race resolves itself as Sabalenka, Rybakina, Pegula and Gauff continue through the draw. Scores and schedules are updating daily through the finals on September 12–13.
