WTA Tennis Player – Iga Świątek (Poland)

Iga Świątek was introduced to tennis by her father, Tomasz Świątek, a former Olympic rower who represented Poland at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Inspired by her older sister Agata, who also played tennis, Iga took up the sport at the age of five.

Date of Birth 31 May 2001
Birthplace Warsaw, Poland
Nationality Polish
Height 1.76 m (5 ft 9 in)
Playing Style Right-handed (two-handed backhand)

Early Life

While Agata eventually stepped away from competitive tennis because of injuries, Iga continued her development and quickly emerged as one of Poland's brightest young prospects.

Her junior career was highly successful. In 2018, she won the Wimbledon girls' singles title and captured the French Open girls' doubles championship, announcing herself as one of the world's leading young talents.

Playing Style

Świątek is widely regarded as one of the most complete players in modern women's tennis. Although she excels on every surface, her dominance on clay has earned comparisons with some of the greatest clay-court players in history.

Key Strengths

  • Heavy topspin forehand that pushes opponents deep behind the baseline
  • Reliable and aggressive two-handed backhand
  • Outstanding movement and athleticism
  • Excellent return of serve
  • Tactical intelligence and point construction
  • Ability to seamlessly switch from defense to attack
  • Exceptional consistency during long rallies

Unlike many power hitters, Świątek combines aggressive shot-making with remarkable precision and patience. She is equally comfortable dictating rallies or counterpunching when required. Analysts and fans regularly praise her footwork and court positioning as among the very best on the WTA Tour.

Professional Career

Świątek enjoyed one of the fastest rises in modern tennis.

Her breakthrough came in 2020 when, at just 19 years old, she won the French Open without dropping a set, becoming:

  • The first Polish player to win a Grand Slam singles title.
  • The youngest Roland Garros women's champion since Monica Seles in 1992.

She continued her remarkable ascent by becoming World No. 1 in April 2022 following Ashleigh Barty's retirement. During the 2022 season, Świątek produced one of the most dominant campaigns in recent history, winning numerous titles and compiling a 37-match winning streak.

Career Highlights

  • Multiple Grand Slam singles titles
  • Four French Open championships (2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024)
  • US Open champion (2022)
  • Wimbledon champion (2025), becoming the first Polish singles champion at the tournament
  • Olympic bronze medal for Poland at the 2024 Paris Olympics
  • Multiple WTA 1000 titles
  • Extended periods as World No. 1

Mental Strength

One of Świątek's defining qualities is her professionalism and mental preparation. She has worked extensively with sports psychologist Daria Abramowicz, making sports psychology an integral part of her training from an early stage in her career.

Her calm demeanor, disciplined routines and ability to recover quickly from setbacks have become hallmarks of her success. Rather than relying solely on athletic ability, Świątek approaches matches with careful tactical planning and emotional control.

Rivalries

Świątek has been involved in several of the defining rivalries of her era, particularly against:

These matchups have featured regularly in Grand Slam finals and WTA 1000 events, helping shape one of the strongest generations in women's tennis.

Off the Court

Away from tennis, Świątek is known for her thoughtful and reserved personality. She enjoys reading, listening to rock music and following psychology.

She has also been active in charitable initiatives, including organizing the "Iga Świątek and Friends for Ukraine" exhibition event in 2022, which raised significant funds for children and teenagers affected by the war in Ukraine.

Achievements and Legacy

Świątek is widely regarded as the greatest Polish tennis player in history. Her sustained excellence, dominance on clay and success across multiple surfaces have established her as one of the defining players of her generation.

As of July 2026, she remains among the world's leading players despite a comparatively challenging season. She is ranked No. 3 in the WTA standings and entered Wimbledon as the defending champion before suffering a surprise third-round defeat to Alexandra Eala. Even so, her résumé—including multiple Grand Slam titles, a Wimbledon crown and an Olympic medal—has already secured her place among the modern greats of women's tennis.
