  • Meta is accelerating its push into AI-powered eyewear, betting that glasses could become one of the most important ways consumers interact with artificial intelligence. The company is expanding beyond its established Ray-Ban Meta line with new Meta-branded glasses, more capable AI models and applications aimed at accessibility, navigation, communication and everyday assistance.

In June, Meta announced a new partnership with EssilorLuxottica to launch Meta Glasses, a new range built on the technology developed for the company's existing AI eyewear. The collection launched with 26 styles and starts at $299. Meta said the glasses are designed to provide an all-day AI assistant that can understand what the wearer is seeing and respond through a hands-free interface.

A Bigger Role for AI

The expansion is closely tied to Meta's development of its own AI models. The company introduced Muse Spark in April as a model designed specifically for Meta's products. Meta subsequently began rolling the technology into its AI glasses, promising faster responses and stronger multimodal capabilities.

Meta says its latest glasses can provide assistance with tasks such as identifying and understanding objects, answering questions about a user's surroundings, providing recommendations and translating conversations. The company is also adding support for more languages and developing pedestrian navigation for glasses that do not have a built-in display.

This represents a shift in the role of smart glasses. Rather than functioning primarily as cameras, headphones or connected accessories, Meta is positioning them as a persistent AI interface that can observe the user's environment and provide information without requiring a phone to be taken out.

From Consumer Gadget to Platform

Meta's strategy is also becoming broader geographically and commercially. Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses have expanded into additional markets, including Japan, where Meta and EssilorLuxottica launched the products in May.

Meta is simultaneously investing in physical retail. The company has been expanding its Meta Lab stores, where consumers can try AI glasses alongside Meta's other hardware. The strategy gives the company a way to demonstrate a product category that can be difficult to understand from specifications alone.

The company is also attempting to build an ecosystem around the glasses. In July, Meta announced nearly $2 million in grants to 30 organizations using its AI glasses for accessibility, workforce safety, education, agriculture and economic opportunity.

Accessibility Emerges as a Key Use Case

Accessibility has become one of the strongest arguments for AI glasses. Meta highlights applications in which the glasses can describe surroundings, read information, help users navigate and provide hands-free assistance.

The company has specifically promoted the technology among blind and low-vision users, people with mobility disabilities and people who need assistance with everyday routines. Meta has also announced initiatives providing glasses to blind veterans in the United States.

These applications demonstrate why glasses may have an advantage over smartphones for some AI tasks: the camera and microphone are already positioned with the user, while audio responses can be delivered without requiring the wearer to hold a device.

Privacy Becomes the Biggest Challenge

Meta's rapid expansion is occurring alongside mounting privacy concerns. Because the glasses can capture photographs and video from the wearer's perspective, critics argue that people nearby may not always know when they are being recorded.

The issue has become particularly contentious in Europe. In August, German digital-rights organization HateAid filed a criminal complaint concerning the sale of Ray-Ban Meta glasses, alleging that their recording capabilities can conflict with German privacy protections.

The controversy highlights a fundamental challenge for AI eyewear: unlike a smartphone, a pair of glasses can be used continuously and discreetly in public. As the devices become more capable, questions about consent, recording indicators, data processing and acceptable use are likely to become increasingly important.

Meta's Bet on the Next Computing Interface

Meta's continued investment suggests that the company sees AI glasses as more than a niche accessory. The combination of cameras, microphones, open-ear audio and increasingly capable AI gives the company a potential platform that sits between smartphones and augmented-reality headsets.

The immediate challenge is balancing usefulness with trust. Meta needs consumers to see AI glasses as practical tools rather than intrusive recording devices, while also convincing governments and the public that the technology can be deployed responsibly.

For now, Meta is pushing ahead on both fronts: expanding the hardware, improving the AI and searching for new everyday uses. If the company succeeds, glasses could become one of the first consumer devices in which artificial intelligence is continuously present without demanding the user's full attention.
