Bukayo Saka's close-range finish settled a scrappy contest at Villa Park, extending Arsenal's perfect start to the title defense while a much-changed Aston Villa remain without a goal or a point.
Arsenal made it two wins from two to open the defense of their Premier League title, edging past a much-changed Aston Villa side 1-0 at Villa Park thanks to Bukayo Saka's second-half strike. It was an edgy, low-quality affair for long spells, with Mikel Arteta's side controlling possession without carving out many clear openings, but a well-worked move down the left ultimately proved enough to see off a Villa team still adjusting to a summer of major departures.
The result means Arsenal join Manchester City, Hull City and Chelsea as the only teams to win each of their opening two league matches, while extending their remarkable run of never having lost their first away game of a Premier League season for five years running — all without conceding. For Villa, it's a second straight defeat without scoring to open the campaign, following a 4-0 opening-day thumping by Brighton, leaving Unai Emery's side pointless and joint-bottom of the table alongside Tottenham Hotspur.
Chances were scarce for long periods of an entertaining but low-quality first half. Villa's best moment came early on, when some hesitation in the Arsenal backline allowed Emiliano Buendía to fire off a rasping effort that crashed against the crossbar with David Raya beaten. Riccardo Calafiori then went close at the other end with a glancing header that sailed just over, but debutant goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was otherwise untroubled in the Villa goal, with the hosts failing to register a single shot, on or off target, before the interval.
Arsenal controlled possession for long spells but managed only seven shots in total by full-time, with the breakthrough eventually coming from a slick, patient passing sequence rather than sustained pressure.
The game's pivotal moment arrived in the 56th minute, when referee Jarred Gillett initially pointed to the penalty spot after Bukayo Saka went down under a challenge from Ian Maatsen, only for VAR to intervene and correctly identify the contact had occurred just outside the box. Martin Ødegaard curled the resulting free-kick narrowly off target, but Arsenal did not have to wait long to find their breakthrough. Substitute Eberechi Eze slid a pass into Calafiori on the left of the box, and the Italian's low cutback was bundled home by Saka from close range in the 59th minute for his second goal in as many games.
Villa improved after going behind, with John McGinn curling an effort just wide in the 61st minute, and pushed for an equaliser as the game opened up. But Arsenal saw out the closing stages comfortably, introducing debutants Ezri Konsa and Bruno Guimarães from the bench — the former facing his old club for the first time since his summer move — as Mikel Arteta's side held on for a hard-fought 1-0 win on the night of his 250th Premier League match in charge of the Gunners.

Arsenal move to six points from two games, sitting just behind league leaders Manchester City on goal difference, and will feel encouraged by another clean sheet even in a below-par attacking display. For Aston Villa, the alarm bells are growing louder: without a goal or a shot on target through two matches, Emery faces mounting pressure to find attacking solutions following the summer sale of Ezri Konsa and other key departures, with a testing run of fixtures still to come.
