Cole Palmer's stunning solo finish settled a seven-goal thriller at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea survived a spirited Brighton fightback to make it two wins from two under Xabi Alonso.
Chelsea marked Xabi Alonso's home debut in style, racing into a three-goal lead inside 32 minutes before having to hang on as Brighton produced a determined second-half comeback that fell just short. Goals from Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto and João Pedro put the hosts firmly in control early on, only for Malick Yalcouyé's first Premier League goal and a Joao Pedro own goal to drag Brighton back into the contest. Cole Palmer's brilliant individual effort with 16 minutes remaining ultimately proved decisive, though Pascal Groß's stoppage-time header meant Chelsea had to see out a nervy finish at Stamford Bridge.
The result extended Chelsea's perfect start to the 2026/27 campaign to two wins from two, while condemning Brighton to their first defeat of the season despite a spell of second-half dominance in which the visitors had the better of the possession and territory.
Chelsea could hardly have started better. Just four minutes in, a João Pedro header from a corner was blocked on the line by Mats Wieffer, and the loose ball fell kindly for Romeo Lavia to poke home his first goal for the club since his £53 million move from Southampton. Ten minutes later it was 2-0: Morgan Rogers held off his marker before cutting the ball back for Pedro Neto to turn home from close range following a swift counter-attack. Chelsea's third arrived in the 32nd minute, a sweeping move finished off by João Pedro after a superb driving run and pass from Jorrel Hato.
Chelsea had scored three times inside 31 minutes and looked to be cruising, but Brighton's response, led by teenage debutant Malick Yalcouyé, turned a rout into a genuine contest.
Brighton pulled a goal back three minutes later when Yalcouyé volleyed home a rebound after Emiliano Martínez had initially saved well from Charalampos Kostoulas, marking the young forward's first Premier League goal on his first start. The Seagulls continued to grow into the game after the break and got themselves back within one just after the hour mark, when Pascal Groß's cross was inadvertently deflected in by João Pedro for an own goal, making it 3-2 and putting Chelsea firmly on the back foot.
With Stamford Bridge growing nervy, Cole Palmer settled things in the 74th minute, bursting through midfield on a driving run before lashing a brilliant left-footed finish beyond Bart Verbruggen from outside the box to restore Chelsea's two-goal cushion. Brighton refused to give up, however, and substitute Pascal Groß headed home a stoppage-time consolation in the sixth minute of added time to make it 4-3 — the fourth successive league meeting in which Brighton have scored three or more goals against Chelsea, a feat no side had managed against the Blues in 50 years — but there was no time left for a leveller.

Chelsea's win keeps Xabi Alonso unbeaten and perfect through two Premier League matches, with a testing trip to reigning champions Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium up next. Brighton, meanwhile, suffer their first defeat of the young season but will take heart from a spirited response under new head coach Fabian Hürzeler's staff, ahead of a home fixture against Leeds United at the Amex Stadium.
