Bruno Fernandes tore Ipswich apart with a 28-minute hat-trick as Manchester United overturned a first-half deficit to thrash the newly-promoted Tractor Boys at Old Trafford.
Manchester United bounced back from their opening-weekend humbling at Hull City in emphatic fashion, thrashing newly-promoted Ipswich Town 5-2 in their first home game of the 2026/27 Premier League season. It looked like being another difficult afternoon for Michael Carrick's side after Leif Davis fired the visitors ahead in the first half, but captain Bruno Fernandes inspired a stunning turnaround with a 28-minute hat-trick either side of the break, before Harry Maguire and Bryan Mbeumo added further gloss. Chuba Akpom's late consolation was mere academic as United ran out convincing winners in front of their own fans.
Ipswich arrived at Old Trafford full of confidence off the back of five straight wins, and for half an hour they looked every bit the part. Julio Enciso and Daizen Maeda both forced good saves out of Senne Lammens before Abdul Fatawu skinned Luke Shaw down the right and squared for Leif Davis to side-foot the visitors into a shock 29th-minute lead. Old Trafford grew edgy, with the memory of the previous week's defeat to Hull City still fresh.
United trailed on expected goals at the interval, 0.74 to 0.98, despite dominating possession and territory for large spells of the opening 45 minutes.
Relief arrived just before the break: Marcelino Núñez's slip in midfield presented Matheus Cunha with the chance to release Bruno Fernandes, who cut inside and finished from a tight angle to make it 1-1 at the interval. United came out for the second half transformed. Fernandes' captaincy showed itself in numbers — after Mbeumo struck the underside of the crossbar from close range, Harry Maguire's driven effort deflected in off Jacob Greaves in the 56th minute to put the hosts ahead for the first time. Four minutes later, Greaves brought down Cunha in the box and was booked as Fernandes stepped up to convert the resulting penalty. His hat-trick was wrapped up in the 68th minute when a loose ball fell to him from five yards after a blocked Mbeumo effort, and he steered it home with ease.
With the game long since settled, Bryan Mbeumo added a fifth in the 82nd minute, lifting a first-time lob over Kjell Scherpen after a delightful Fernandes pass. Ipswich did grab a stoppage-time consolation when a mistake from Lisandro Martínez let in Julio Enciso, who squared for Chuba Akpom to tap home, but it did nothing to change the outcome on a afternoon that belonged to Fernandes and United.

The win moves Manchester United level on points with Ipswich after two matchdays, though a stuttering defensive display — Shaw and Maguire both struggled at times — will give Michael Carrick plenty to work on before United's trip to Everton on September 6. Ipswich, who had won five matches in a row across all competitions coming into the fixture, will look to regroup quickly with a testing trip to Liverpool up next.
