João Pedro's 31-second strike, a debut goal from record signing Morgan Rogers and a Cole Palmer finish see Chelsea edge a chaotic West London derby, despite twice being pegged back by Fulham.
LONDON — Xabi Alonso began his Chelsea reign with a chaotic 3-2 win away at Fulham on Monday night, as João Pedro's rapid opener, a debut goal from British-record signing Morgan Rogers and a clinical Cole Palmer finish proved just enough to survive a Fulham fightback in a seven-goal, momentum-swinging West London derby at Craven Cottage.
The match, which closed out the opening round of the 2026/27 Premier League season, doubled as the first competitive game in charge for both managers: Alonso, appointed at Stamford Bridge over the summer, against Fulham's Alvaro Arbeloa, also newly installed at Craven Cottage.
Chelsea could not have dreamed of a better start. Palmer picked out João Pedro with a first-time through ball inside the opening minute, and the Brazilian forward latched onto it to slot home after just 31 seconds — the earliest goal in a Premier League season opener on record.
Fulham hit back midway through the first half when Josh King drilled a low effort into the near post beyond goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who was left exposed by what was widely described as a poor piece of goalkeeping, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 23rd minute. Chelsea restored their lead before the break, however, as £117 million ($160m) record signing Morgan Rogers marked his debut with a simple tap-in after a driving run and cutback from Maxence Lacroix, making it 2-1 at half-time.
Chelsea appeared to be pulling clear early in the second half when Cole Palmer — in scintillating form throughout — slid home a third goal in the 49th minute after good hold-up play from João Pedro, extending the lead to 3-1. But Fulham refused to fold, hitting back for a second time through Gonzalo García, who nodded in a goal on his first Premier League start in the 54th minute to make it 3-2 and set up a nervy finish.
Fulham pushed hard for a late equalizer, with Rodrigo Muniz forcing a routine save from Sanchez from distance and Pedro Neto seeing a low effort drift into the side netting, while at the other end a Chelsea "goal" was correctly ruled out for offside in the build-up. Chelsea held on through five minutes of stoppage time to seal a 3-2 win, giving Alonso victory in his first competitive match in charge.

The result gives Alonso a winning start in his first Premier League game as Chelsea manager, though the performance underlined issues at both ends of the pitch: an attacking display praised as "scintillating at times," but also defensive lapses — particularly involving Sanchez — that had undermined the team in the recent past, despite Chelsea's summer outlay of around £350 million ($477m), which included the club-record fee for Rogers.
For Fulham and first-time manager Alvaro Arbeloa, the display offered some encouraging signs going forward, including goals from King and debutant García, but it ultimately ended in defeat in his first game in charge of the club.
