Newly promoted Hull City made a sensational return to the Premier League, defeating Manchester United 2–0 at the MKM Stadium. The Tigers scored both goals in the first half and then defended their advantage impressively to secure a historic victory.
Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, reacting quickest to convert from a corner. Nobel Mendy doubled Hull's advantage in the 38th minute, heading home from a Regan Slater free-kick. Both goals came from set pieces, exposing Manchester United's defensive weaknesses.
United dominated possession after falling behind but struggled to turn their territorial advantage into clear-cut opportunities. Hull remained compact and disciplined, frustrating Michael Carrick's side and securing their first league victory over Manchester United since 1974. The result was also Hull's first Premier League win against United.
