Yamela Mbuthuma struck twice off the bench as defending champions Orlando Pirates cruised to a comfortable away win, moving three points clear at the top of the Betway Premiership table.
Orlando Pirates put down another statement in their title defence, cruising to a 4-0 win away at newly-promoted Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night. An early Gamphani Lungu penalty settled a nervy opening period, before Boitumelo Radiopane and a Yamela Mbuthuma brace turned a slender first-half lead into a rout after the break, extending the Buccaneers' remarkable unbeaten run on the road to 17 league matches without defeat as visitors.
The win took Pirates to 13 points from five matches — four wins and a draw — moving them three points clear of the chasing pack, having come into the fixture fresh off reaching the MTN8 final. Kruger United, appearing in the top flight for the first time, remain winless and searching for their first points of the campaign.
Pirates could hardly have wished for a better start, winning a penalty inside the opening three minutes when Kamogelo Sebelebele was hauled down by a Kruger United defender near the byline. Gamphani Lungu stepped up and sent goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari the wrong way to give the visitors an early lead — his fourth goal in all competitions this season — but the moment was soured almost immediately when Lungu went down clutching his hamstring and had to be stretchered off, replaced by Oswin Appollis.
Despite falling behind inside four minutes, newly-promoted Kruger United refused to be overawed, with Aphiwe Mphote heading over the crossbar and later seeing another effort cleared off the line, while Boitumelo Malatjie rattled the woodwork as the hosts searched for an equaliser.
Pirates were made to survive some anxious moments of their own before the interval. A goal-line clearance from Sbangani Zulu preserved their lead deep into first-half stoppage time, and Sipho Sibiya also rattled the upright with a close-range effort late in the half, leaving the Buccaneers to go into the break with only a slender 1-0 advantage despite their dominance in possession.
The contest was settled after the restart. Boitumelo Radiopane, continuing his fine start to the season, doubled Pirates' lead in the 54th minute, working his way past the Kruger defence before calmly slotting past Ntwari for his second goal in as many starts. Substitute Yamela Mbuthuma then took over, heading home a third in the 79th minute before adding a spectacular fourth in second-half stoppage time — driving a right-footed strike from outside the box into the net after being set up by a Lebone Seema counter-attack — to complete a comfortable night's work for the champions.

With Mamelodi Sundowns having moved level on points but trailing on goal difference following their own win over Milford FC the same week, the early title race is shaping up as another two-horse battle between South Africa's traditional powerhouses. For Kruger United, the result is a sobering reminder of the gulf in class they must close as they continue adjusting to life in the top flight.
