Stefanos Tsitsipas produced one of the biggest first-round victories of the 2026 US Open, overcoming No. 10 seed Arthur Fils 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-4 after recovering from a set and break down.
Stefanos Tsitsipas has delivered an emphatic reminder of his Grand Slam pedigree, eliminating No. 10 seed Arthur Fils in a four-set battle at the 2026 US Open.
The Greek came from behind to defeat the in-form Frenchman 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-4 at Louis Armstrong Stadium, overturning a matchup that had previously been dominated by Fils.
Fils arrived in New York carrying considerable momentum after winning the Cincinnati Masters title just eight days earlier. Instead, his campaign ended in the opening round as Tsitsipas produced a stirring comeback and one of his most significant victories of the season.
Stefanos Tsitsipas def. Arthur Fils 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-4
Venue: Louis Armstrong Stadium, New York
Round: First round
Fils: No. 10 seed
The match initially appeared to be following the script that had defined the rivalry between the two players.
Fils had entered the contest with a perfect 5-0 record against Tsitsipas. The Frenchman looked comfortable again early on, taking the first set 6-4 and continuing to apply pressure with his explosive baseline game.
The situation became even more difficult for Tsitsipas in the second set. Fils moved ahead 5-2 and was within reach of taking a commanding two-set lead.
The second set proved to be the defining passage of the contest. Tsitsipas needed to find a response while Fils appeared to be in control.
Instead of becoming increasingly defensive, Tsitsipas increased the aggression in his game. He attacked the net, looked to dictate with his forehand and made Fils work harder for every point.
Once the Greek recovered the break, the balance of the match shifted. Tsitsipas then dominated the tiebreak, winning 7-3 to level the contest at one set apiece.
The comeback was particularly impressive given that Fils had been serving for the set at 5-2. What looked like a straightforward route to a two-set advantage suddenly became a completely different match.
The third set belonged overwhelmingly to Tsitsipas.
With his confidence restored, the Greek began taking the ball earlier and dictating rallies. Fils struggled to reproduce the intensity that had carried him through the opening set and into a commanding position in the second.
Tsitsipas won the third set 6-1, putting himself one set away from one of the tournament's biggest opening-round upsets.
The fourth set was more competitive, but Tsitsipas remained composed. He ultimately secured the decisive break and closed out the match 6-4.
The victory was historic for Tsitsipas in another respect: it was his first win over Fils.
Before the match, the Frenchman had won all five of their previous meetings. Tsitsipas therefore entered the contest not only facing a seeded opponent but also attempting to overturn a significant head-to-head disadvantage.
By recovering from 5-2 down in the second set and winning three consecutive sets, he finally found a way through a matchup that had consistently troubled him.
The defeat is a painful ending to what had otherwise been an extraordinary stretch for Fils.
Just over a week before the US Open, the 21-year-old captured his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati. That triumph represented the biggest title of his young career and sent him into New York as one of the tournament's most intriguing dark horses.
The turnaround from Cincinnati to the US Open was extremely short, however. The physical and mental demands of winning a Masters 1000 title were followed almost immediately by a difficult first-round draw against a former Grand Slam finalist.
Fils had chances to put the match away. His failure to convert his advantage in the second set ultimately proved decisive.
The result also represents another important step in Tsitsipas's attempt to rebuild his career after a difficult period.
Once established as one of the leading players in men's tennis, Tsitsipas reached a career-high ranking of No. 3 and twice advanced to Grand Slam finals. Injuries and inconsistent results subsequently pushed him down the rankings.
In July, however, Tsitsipas ended a 16-month title drought by winning the Swiss Open. His ranking had fallen outside the world's top 80 earlier in the year before his results began to improve.
He entered the US Open ranked around No. 50 and unseeded, making the first-round assignment against Fils especially difficult.
Tsitsipas has also made changes to his coaching setup. He has spoken publicly about the importance of finding greater calm and clarity within his team, and the victory over Fils provided perhaps his clearest evidence yet that the reset is beginning to pay dividends.
Tsitsipas credited the recent coaching change with helping restore his confidence and described the victory as an important validation of the work he has put into rebuilding his game.
Tsitsipas's performance was not simply about surviving Fils's collapse. He actively took control of the match.
The Greek struck 50 winners during the four-set victory, according to the ATP Tour, illustrating the attacking approach that has been central to his best tennis.
His ability to transition from baseline exchanges into forward movement was also important. Rather than allowing Fils to dictate with his powerful groundstrokes, Tsitsipas repeatedly looked for ways to shorten points and apply pressure.
Tsitsipas's victory immediately changes the complexion of his section of the draw.
A No. 10 seed has been eliminated at the first hurdle, while an unseeded former Grand Slam finalist moves into the second round with considerable momentum.
The Greek will now have an opportunity to build on the biggest victory of his US Open campaign. The key question will be whether he can maintain the level of intensity and concentration that transformed the match against Fils.
Tsitsipas advances to the second round, where he will face another test as he attempts to extend his run in New York.
For Fils, meanwhile, the tournament ends far earlier than expected. His Cincinnati triumph had raised expectations that he could make a deep run at the final Grand Slam of the year, but the draw immediately presented him with one of the most dangerous unseeded opponents available.
The defeat should not overshadow the progress Fils has made throughout the season. Winning a Masters 1000 title at such a young age remains a major achievement, even if the transition to the US Open proved brutally short.
Ultimately, this was about more than advancing to the second round.
Tsitsipas entered Louis Armstrong Stadium facing a player who had beaten him five times, a seeded opponent coming off the biggest title of his career and a deficit of 5-2 in the second set.
He responded by winning the second-set tiebreak, dominating the third and closing out the fourth.
For a player attempting to rediscover the form that once took him to the top three in the world and two Grand Slam finals, the victory could prove to be an important psychological milestone.
The US Open is still in its opening stages, but Tsitsipas has already produced one of the tournament's clearest statements: the former contender is not finished yet.
