Iga Świątek made an emphatic start to her 2026 US Open campaign, defeating Wang Xiyu 6–2, 6–3 in 88 minutes at Louis Armstrong Stadium and continuing the resurgence that has made her a serious contender in New York.
Iga Świątek began her bid for a second US Open title with the kind of efficient performance that has become synonymous with her best tennis. The Polish eighth seed dispatched China's Wang Xiyu in straight sets, 6–2, 6–3, requiring just one hour and 28 minutes to secure her place in the second round.
The victory was particularly significant because it came after a difficult opening half of the 2026 season for the six-time Grand Slam champion. Świątek arrived in New York with renewed confidence, however, after finding her form on the North American hard-court swing.
Świątek established control from the opening stages, using her heavy groundstrokes and aggressive court positioning to prevent Wang from settling into long attacking exchanges.
The first set was largely one-way traffic. Świątek converted her pressure into a 6–2 opening set and immediately put herself in position to finish the match without allowing her opponent a route back into the contest.
Wang showed greater resistance in the second set. The players traded holds through the first seven games, but Świątek remained patient and continued looking for opportunities to attack.
Her breakthrough arrived late in the set. A precisely placed forehand produced the crucial break, after which Świątek served out the match to complete another straight-sets Grand Slam opening-round victory.
The result extended Świątek's extraordinary record in Grand Slam opening rounds. According to the WTA, she has now won 28 consecutive opening matches at the majors, with 28 of her 30 career first-round Grand Slam victories coming in straight sets.
Her only previous first-round Grand Slam defeat came against Viktorija Golubic at Wimbledon in 2019, highlighting just how consistently she has handled the opening hurdle at tennis's biggest tournaments.
Świątek's convincing opening win comes against the backdrop of one of the most challenging periods of her career. Earlier in 2026, she fell short of her usual standards at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
A coaching change also added another layer of uncertainty. Świątek began working with Francisco Roig during the season and subsequently used the period after Wimbledon to make technical and tactical adjustments.
Those changes have begun to produce results. Świątek captured her first title of the year in Toronto, defeating Elena Rybakina in the final, before reaching the semifinals in Cincinnati.
The Cincinnati run ended with a defeat to Jessica Pegula, but Świątek's performances on hard courts gave her renewed belief heading into New York. Her victory over Wang suggests that the confidence has carried into the final Grand Slam of the season.
Świątek entered the US Open as the eighth seed and as a former champion, having lifted the trophy in New York in 2022. She has not advanced beyond the quarterfinals in her two most recent appearances at the tournament, making this year's campaign an important opportunity to reassert herself at Flushing Meadows.
The women's draw is particularly competitive. Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka is seeking a third consecutive US Open crown, while Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, Mirra Andreeva and other leading contenders are also targeting the title.
Świątek's recent hard-court form nevertheless makes her a dangerous presence in the draw. Her Toronto title and Cincinnati semifinal run demonstrated that she can once again impose her preferred high-intensity style away from her traditionally strongest surface, clay.
Świątek's second-round opponent will be Argentina's Nadia Podoroska. Podoroska advanced after defeating Simona Waltert, setting up a meeting with the former US Open champion.
On paper, Świątek will enter that contest as the favorite, but the Pole will be looking to maintain the same discipline that carried her through the opening round. Her victory over Wang was notable not because it was dramatic, but precisely because it was controlled and efficient.
There were few moments of genuine danger for Świątek against Wang. That lack of drama may ultimately be one of the most encouraging aspects of the performance.
After a season in which she has had to rebuild confidence and adapt to changes around her team and game, Świątek did exactly what a Grand Slam contender needs to do in the first round: she imposed herself early, absorbed resistance when it arrived and finished the match cleanly.
The US Open is still a long way from its final weekend, but Świątek has already delivered an important early message. The former champion looks comfortable in New York again, and if her hard-court resurgence continues, she could become one of the tournament's most serious threats.
